When Cabramatta’s streets come alive with lanterns, music, food and the unmistakable energy of a grand celebration, you know the Moon Festival has arrived. Celebrating its 26th year, this much-loved festival is a time to embrace tradition, explore the vibrant streets of Cabramatta and, of course, indulge in the local food the town is so well loved for. Held on the traditional lands of the Cabrogal of the Dharug Nation, the festival invites everyone to enjoy a day of festivities and fun. Returning to Cabramatta Town Centre on Sunday 20 September, Fairfield City Council’s Cabramatta Moon Festival is one of Western Sydney’s most vibrant celebrations of culture, community and cuisine. Running from 11am to 8pm, the free festival invites everyone to experience the traditions and flavours of the Mid-Autumn Festival while discovering the many delights of Cabramatta along the way.

Rooted in ancient harvest traditions, the Moon Festival is celebrated across Southeast Asia and is closely connected to the full moon, changing seasons, harvest and stories passed down through generations.
Expect the streets to come alive with live music, cultural performances, market stalls, food stalls, amusement rides and activities for the kids. Keep an eye out for the much-loved lantern parade, led by the Moon Goddess and Archer, before settling in for an evening of entertainment and the festival’s 8pm fireworks finale.

And then there’s the food. From the festival’s famous pho and mooncake eating competitions to a dedicated BBQ charcoal precinct and the hotly anticipated Battle of the Broths with Duncan Lu, Vietnamese-Australian home cook, recipe writer, and TV cooking show finalist, which will see Pho going head-to-head with Bun Bo Hue. There’s plenty to tempt hungry festival-goers.

Order yourself a freshly brewed cup or go for one of their fancier options, it’s one for the ‘gram.
Coffee and matcha lovers, this one’s for you. Katsu Café brings a Japanese-inspired touch to Cabramatta with its well-made coffee, matcha drinks and relaxed café vibe. Whether you like your matcha bold and earthy or smooth and creamy, this is the place to join the green team.
For a Cabramatta rite of passage, head to D & N Coffee for a freshly made sugarcane juice. Wonderfully sweet, it’s icy, refreshing and nature’s answer to an afternoon pick-me-up.

Known for their crispy Vietnamese Banh Mi rolls, their custard puffs also have our attention. Small, golden parcels of deliciousness. Oozing with hot, creamy custard and pillowy on the outside, you won’t be able to stop at just one. Order the bigger pack and chomp on them as you explore.
A Cabramatta icon, one look at the roast meats hanging behind the counter at Good Luck B.B.Q. Shop and lunch suddenly becomes a much easier decision. Choose from BBQ duck, ribs, pork and sausages, or tripe for the more adventurous eater. Watch your meal being prepared for a taste of what’s to come.
A good Bahn Mi is practically part of the Cabramatta post code, and Viet Hoa Hot Bread is famous for theirs. Their crusty baguettes are packed with savoury goodness, crunchy vegetables and fresh Vietnamese flavours. A delicious flavour bomb. Best eaten while wandering - although trying not to drop anything is part of the fun.

The place to be if seafood is your jam. Fresh oysters share the menu with fish, lobster, crab, prawns and squid. There’s everything from seafood baos and sashimi to fried rice and noodles, making this a particularly good stop if you’re craving seafood but can’t decide exactly what you’re hungry for.
This is a hidden gem you can discover at the end of John St Arcade. It’s a café with both indoor and outdoor seating, offering a blend of traditional Asian favourites and familiar Western dishes. This is a great choice when everyone at the table is craving something different and you’re after a relaxed spot from the thriving festival thoroughfare.

ROUND OFF WITH DESSERT
Get ready for some seriously good dessert, where fluffy souffle pancakes and heavenly cream-filled choux are the order of the day. Load up on a few as after one bite, you’ll definitely be wanting seconds. Better yet, bring your friends and try a bunch of the flavours, including black sesame, hojicha, taro red bean, crème brulee and lychee rose.
A One CAKE SHOP is a treasure trove of traditional Southeast Asian bakery treats, with plenty of sweet and savoury temptations to discover. Try their popular mooncakes, mung bean cakes, sesame balls, red bean buns and more. It’s been a fixture of Cabramatta for years, the perfect place to order something you’ve never tried before and take a few things home.
Alongside the everyday essentials, this local supermarket has been a cornerstone of Cabramatta’s Asian grocery scene since 1980. Its fruit section is a colourful showcase of produce, making it a fun place to discover something unfamiliar or pick up a favourite fruit for a healthy dessert.
