Travel and Play in Marsden Park

Marsden Park is a suburb found on the traditional lands of the Darug People, just outside of Blacktown. The Darug are known for their connection to the land and waterways, and this can certainly be found in the lakes and green parks of this family friendly locality. With an abundant array of parklands and a vibrant sense of community atmosphere, Marsden Park is an inviting place to spend a day.

Usually synonymous with the names Costco and IKEA, Marsden Park is the home shopper’s dream, furnishing a whole house with the businesses found here. But looking beyond, you will find a suburb that values family time and spending it in the outdoors together.

The best way to explore Marsden Park is by car, and of course starting the day with a coffee. The Baristas’ Shed, right in the heart of Marsden Park surrounded by homeware and appliance stores, is a busy, popular café with a rustic vibe and great menu. Take a seat in the outdoor area and enjoy the hubbub atmosphere before some exploring.

If you're a sweets fan, stop at the Lindt chocolate factory outlet (did someone say chocolate?) for a treat then head straight for the Melonba district. Driving through Melonba is picturesque, from manicured homes to new builds and plenty of parks. You’ll find nature corridors in the middle of the road, encouraging outdoor walks which is a clever way of getting to know your neighbours.

Making your way to Lake Melonba, it is a tranquil parkland that fosters family time. There are birds calling, trees rustling, water flowing and if you listen closely the frog’s song comes alive. You’ll find a large playground for kids, a walkway around the lake and plenty of spots for a family picnic or moment of reflection.

Lake Melonba is part of a master-planned design that emphasizes a connection to the outdoors and a healthy lifestyle. The community includes parks, nature corridors, walking and bike paths, sporting fields, playgrounds, and the lake itself. One of its unique features also, is when viewed from above the lake takes the whimsical shape of a frog, reminiscent of a wonderful John Olsen frog painting brought to life.

The area is also home to various frog species, including the endangered green and golden bell frog, and locals are passionate about protecting their habitat. For a unique and educational local activity, join one of Blacktown City Council’s frog-spotting tours, fun for kids - and adults - alike.

You’ll find more playful parks and community areas in Elara - including the hugely popular Livvi's Place - a Stockland residential community also part of Melonba, with a generous 40 hectares of open space and walkways. Elara Village shopping centre can be found within, with a supermarket, Indian grocer, eateries such as Leaf Café and Watsup Brothers as well as everyday home essentials.

For lunch WEST recommends The Marsden Brewhouse, a pub meets brewery with a great vibe. Popular with locals as well as the nearby industrial area workers, it’s surprisingly spacious and inviting inside, especially with a view of the giant steel beer tanks and cosy firepits on the terrace. There’s great pub food on offer, a gelato cart (yum!), playground for the kids and craft beers made onsite to wash down with your lunch. Take a seat inside with the local crowd or soak up the sun outside.

With tranquil lakes, exciting playgrounds, leisurely walking tracks and room to roam, Marsden Park offers a family day out that’s grounded in nature and full of charm. Time to travel with West!
