If your idea of a weekend away involves sun-drenched coastal shores, salty swims and a place considered a foodie haven, then look no further than Terrigal on the Central Coast. On the traditional lands of the Darkinjung People, Terrigal is a beachside destination that feels like a slice of Australian paradise pie.

Travelling via the Pacific Motorway, Terrigal is an easy drive north. Close enough for a spontaneous escape, but far enough to feel like you’ve left the city behind. Pack your swimmers and get ready for some salty air, as this is a town made for slowing down and enjoying the coastal lifestyle.


The best way to start is with coffee and brekkie at one of the many cafes lining the esplanade. With beachside views, there’s no better place to watch the world go by and soak up the relaxed energy. Bellyfish has some seriously good breakfast tacos filled with scrambled egg, chorizo and Pico de Gallo, and Island Time Espresso Bar offers some fresh, healthy options.



From here the day is yours, depending on if you’re after a chill one or something more active. Join locals for a leisurely stroll along the beach, kayak around Terrigal Lagoon, take a dip in the sea, or visit The Central Coast Marine Discovery Centre. For a burst of energy (and slight breathlessness), brave the incline at The Skillion, a steep headland offering up spectacular coastal views. It’s a geological wonder dating back to the Triassic period. While in Terrigal pay a visit to KAB Gallery, a highlight of the local area. They champion talented Australian artists with original artworks for sale, a memento you can admire for years to come. In the summer months surfing, diving and whale-watching are all great options.

 


From its early sawmilling and shipbuilding past, after a few hours here, you’ll soon see why Terrigal has developed into such a popular coastal town. It’s a place where furry friends are very much part of the local scene, with dog friendly beaches and cafes, and a lifestyle that celebrates its scenic surroundings. Weekend buskers add a lively atmosphere, and most restaurants and venues are decorated in arty ways, adding to the town’s artistic feel. Terrigal is also known across the Central Coast as a foodie hotspot with a thriving social scene. There’s no shortage of amazing places to eat, from casual meals to hatted dining. Seafood is a popular choice, so order your lunch pack from local staple Terrigal Beach Fish & Chip Co and enjoy it by the beach. Little Miss, set inside the old post office, is an elegant space creating the most delicious Mediterranean dishes with a twist, such as banana prawns wrapped in crispy kataifi pastry, and grilled squid with nduja and herb emulsion.



Another favourite spot is Terrigal Pavilion, aka The Pav, right on the water at Terrigal Haven. It’s a lovely walk along the boardwalk to get there, and you can’t beat the views from the rooftop. This is the spot to be on a sunny day, it’s full of life and the vibes are pumping. Finish with dessert at Frankie’s Gelato back on the esplanade, or with some live music and a sundowner at the popular hangout, Terrigal Beach House.
