Exploring Mays Hill

Bordering Parramatta, Mays Hill is a cosy suburb with links to a colonial past. Once part of the Governor's Domain, it is the resting place for some of the area’s first pioneers, as well as being the beating heart of the local Hindu community. Located on the traditional lands of the Dharug people, Mays Hill is a serene place to appreciate diverse culture and a sense of Australian history.

Start your day with coffee and brunch at the local Profiterole Patisserie Mays Hill. Stocked full of cakes, cannoli and eclairs as well as take-home packs of baked goods, it’s a local favourite for good reason. For an insider tip - the eggs benedict, with its hints of roasted sesame and lacings of oregano, will leave you wanting more.

Turning left along the Great Western Highway, you’ll pass by the colourful silk sarees of Pooja’s Boutique, the ladies with their big smiles and stunning sari outfits will be sure to invite you in.

Not long after, you will encounter the heart of Mays Hill, The Sydney Murugan Temple. Open since 1994, it has become a beloved Hindu temple by those near and far. With a large proportion of the Mays Hill community of Hindu faith, the temple is a community meeting place, where everyone is welcome. Take in the intricate carvings, the sculptures of deities and learn more about this serene place of worship. This is truly a stunning piece of authentic architecture.

For a homemade meal of local cuisine, then a visit to the Murugan Temple Canteen on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday evening should also be in your plans. Traditional food, warm company and a certain wholesomeness that comes with temple cuisine.

Take your time afterwards to explore the streets of the surrounding neighbourhood, where old brick houses meet new hi-rise residential dwellings. A visit to Freame and Jones Parks, with their sports fields, courts and kids playgrounds, are a lovely way to gain a sense of the local community.

Before heading home, include a visit to the Mays Hill Cemetery. A historical pillar of the area, it contains the graves of local pioneering families dating back as far as 1839. Classified a historical treasure by the National Trust, it has some fascinating headstone symbolism and inhabitants with stories to share.

The one thing evident about Mays Hill as you explore, is the sense of faith, family and history. For a day of cultural experience and historical learning, be sure to add Mays Hill to your next Western Sydney outing.
