Mount Pritchard, on the traditional lands of the Cabrogal of the Darug Nation, is a leafy suburb where community is king. Local businesses, parks and great food bring people together, alongside Mounties, a much-loved local institution.
Driving into Mount Pritchard, you’re met with rolling hills and plenty of greenery. Originally named Cabramatta Park Estate in 1913 by estate agent Hugh Pritchard, the suburb was renamed in his honour in 1919 after he released landowners from debt. Starting your day at Lions Lookout off Elizabeth Road, you’ll gain a good sense of the suburb with views from above.
Tesla 369 at the Hamel Road Marketplace, is a popular neighbourhood cafe serving Toby’s Estate coffee and a menu with a Serbian twist. Specialities such as cevapi, pljeskavica and karadjordjeva can all be found, WEST couldn’t resist the “palacinke” street-style pancakes - delish. You can even order calamari served in a fried edible bowl, an added bonus! A large mural of Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla is a lovely nod to the owner’s heritage. Afterwards pop into Long Giant General Store for fresh sugarcane juice, it’s also fun to browse the aisles and see what international foods you could try.
Take a drive along Hemphill Ave to admire St.Mary’s Church, and if you’re with the kids, Prout Park’s colourful playground is perfect for burning off some energy.
Mount Pritchard is a superb suburb to find a variety of food. At the local Speedway, Day N Nite Hand Car Wash Burger & Cafe is a unique eatery, and next door is the most divine smelling Pho broth at 2 Foodies Mount Pritchard. With large Vietnam scenes on the wall, you’ll forget you’re at a service station. Lovely little touches of local life. Near Joe Broad Park, Shole’s Deli is a standout for BBQ brisket, tacos, wings, waffle fries and all the BBQ goodness, this is one to add to your list.
For another authentic feel of Mount Pritchard, then a visit to Mounties is a must. Opened in 1968, this community-centred club is the heart of the neighbourhood. Excellent dining options are on offer, including a large, varied menu at M Brassiere, Vietnamese favourites at Bau Turong, casual bites at the Terrace Bar & Cafe, and for an indulgent yum cha meal, head to Jumbo Seafood Restaurant.
There’s a huge amount to choose from, including live seafood from the tank, as fresh as can be. WEST loved the small garden table centrepieces, a unique touch to your dining experience.
After a day in Mount Pritchard, it’s the strong sense of community and quality local spots that stand out – fabulous food and most definitely, a place to come back to time and time again. Explore with West.
